  • Adversity

This was written by a friend of mine who is a missionary in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico:

Adversity is promised to all who would live lives devoted to Jesus Christ. Adversity is not something that we pray for, but it's something that the Lord allows us to go through to gain strength for the trying times that come to all Christians. I think that one of the best tricks of the enemy would be to keep us from going through adversity because then, when it comes way down the road, we won't be ready for it. It's a little like what the military men have to go through in boot camp to learn how to survive in war. Imagine if they just gave the guys a rifle and told them "Good luck" and sent them to the front lines to fight. Instead, they go through some really hard training in a controlled environment that simulates a lot of the things they will be going through in the future fighting.

Around here, we aren't really sure when we are going through major battles or are just being prepared for future battles. And in a way, I think that's a good way to be. After something happens, maybe we will just realize that it was a "drill" but then when the real trials come hard and in rapid succession, we can thank God that He has prepared us for anything that comes at us. In the end, His promise to always be with us is all we really need. If Jesus is with us, no matter what happens, He can handle it!

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:2-4).

"...Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!" (John 4:35).

    November

Wow, it's November already! Which means my birthday is one month away! Which means there are 3 occasions for eating oh so yummy food (Thanksgiving, my birthday, Christmas).

Ah, this is my favorite time of year. Not because it's close to my birthday, but because I love the weather, the beauty it gives to KS, and the smell of fall. The glorious wind that blows the leaves off the trees onto the ground, the brilliant hues of the tall grasses, that nice crisp feel in the air. I can finally reach into the depths of my closet and start wearing all of my favorite sweaters that have been waiting for a year! Unlike most parts of the country, I never ever remember having much of a spring. We have winter, almost spring, ice storm, and then summer. So, fall is the only time I can wear these light sweaters and my light jackets....

Since my last post, I've finished my Wildflower class, have started my Rock Climbing class, roofed the house with my family, and I'm currently helping add an addition on to the barn. The addition will add a stall for the tractors, a tack room for me, and a stable for my horse. I'm so excited!

And do you know what? The Lord is AWESOME. Even more awesome than Aaron, which is saying something. Why is our culture, our generation so afraid of total surrender to Him? I've been afraid of it many times, because of all that it requires, or all that I thought it required. I've always thought that it was so hard and required never being happy or getting what I want again. But you know what? Was I really happy before I surrendered? It hit me like a ton of bricks the other night. Surrender isn't hard in itself. We make it hard. Just submit. Give all your dreams to Him, He's the one who gave you those dreams, and He's preparing you for His good work. If we fully trust in Him, we'll get the desires of our heart. His Word says so. But this doesn't mean we'll get those dreams how we want them, when we want them, or if we even get some of them at all. What's awesome is that we'll get so much more! More than we ever desired or dreamed. How do I know this? Because I can trust Him.

I pray that some of you will understand. Not those of you who thrive off of reading spiritual posts, but those of you who were like me. Those who like stories. Those who wish everyone wouldn't write about spiritual stuff, because somehow, it's just different for you. You know you're a Christian, but where is the joy? Where is the love for others? Why doesn't God always speak to you, or hear your prayers? You've heard His voice before, it's even guided you. You know you're a Christian, because of the blessings in your life. But still, there's something missing. You know it cannot be filled by anything human, so you're just living without this big chunk of your heart. Let me tell you guys, it comes, it is completed, when you totally surrender yourself to Him. In every way, every day, every fiber of your being. Surrender your dreams to Him (He knows them better than anyone else, even you), your life. Everything. And leave it there. You will be amazed at the love that fills your heart and soul. The joy that comes into your life. The blessings that reign down, and how you can bless people, just by being joyful. Not giddy, but have that light of His shining in your eyes when you look at them. Show His love to them. When you're totally surrendered, His love fills you and it can't help but overflow. Oh Lord, You're beautiful!

P.S. If your family owns the above book - read it! If you don't own it, run to a library or buy it offline. It's an amazing story about a girl (who I identified with a lot), who gave her life totally to Christ and how, through Christ, she turned an entire region in the Philippines to Him.

    On to another subject

Well, my second class for the fall is going to be starting Saturday - Fall Wildflower Identification. It's a biology elective; I took the spring version of it a year ago and really loved it. Few know this, but I've always wanted to "publish" a book sometime in my lifetime, and I'd really like to combine my love of photography and flowers in this venture. So sometime when I'm about 60 or so, don't forget to buy my many editions of flower identification books.

The garden's really doing great - I'm swamped in tomatoes and peppers, both of which are main ingredients to salsa. It's a good thing my family really likes salsa.... To use up some of the extra jalapenos, I made jalapeno poppers a couple of nights ago. I had some inclination that they were going to be warmer than usual store-bought ones, just from tasting other things in the garden, but I had no idea that they'd be FIRE-BRAND hot. Aaron would like them, but he's living with a family that we know 40 minutes away and going to college. So, I'll make him some this weekend. For now, I douse them with mozzerella cheese and ranch, and Jon runs outside and screams.

  • Unpacking...

Well.... the clothes are all unpacked! Still unpacking the little stuff though. And cleaning house. It's amazing how dusty a house can get in the country....

First day of class was Tuesday - Small Business Management - I loved it! I didn't know if it would be boring, or if I would get in the "ugh" groove of school again, but it wasn't, and I didn't! By the end of class, we're going to design a huge business plan, focusing on things like the company structure and description, products and services, marketing, and an operational plan. I've made a business plan before for my photography business, but it wasn't nearly as detailed as this one is going to be (it's also for my photography business, but I'm going to change some stuff).

It looks like a fun fall! Alright, got to go finish dusting and weeding!

  • We're back

Well, I'm officially back in KS for the fall semester!

We drove back from CO on Friday, and then Clara and I drove down (Aaron and Isaac followed in another car) to CofO to drop her and her car off. The campus was really cool and I loved meeting Clara's friends and seeing how she lives for the school year now. But I'm glad to be back in KS now - I can't wait to start doing all the yard work that needs to get done! And my first class starts Tuesday: Small Business Management. I need to run and get a book today for it. Every Saturday in September, I'll have a wildflower identification class, which will go towards my botany/biology degree, and then starting in October, I'm taking rock climbing every Tue and Thur! Yeah, this is going to be my fun semester....

Well, I've got to run and get that book, and UNPACK!

  • *Ahem*

    Wow, it's been since May...

Well, I don't have nearly as exciting news as I did last time (when Jake and Amber had their baby), but I am in Colorado now for my yearly two month stay. But sadly, this stay is drawing to a close already... However, I so miss my Kansas friends, my kitten James, my garden and trees, the wind, the open sky... the heat at times...

But when I get back to Kansas, I'll miss Colorado - the beautiful majesty of the mountains, the hiking, the lack of chiggers, the fall-type weather, my Colorado friends, my grandparents, the seminary, little Westcliffe... Ah yes, I just wish I could have the best of both worlds at the same time...

Ah well! New news: I'm going to be starting up my photography business full-time this fall, not just part-time as I have been doing it the past two years. I'm also going to be taking a small business mangement class and a botany elective at Butler this fall. When I'm not making money and then spending it on classes... I'm going to be training Nelly, my horse. I "inherited" her when she was 4, and she hadn't been broke as of yet, but then I started college and you know how that goes.... well, since I'm not going to be in college as much as I have been, I going to be spending time with her. I sure miss riding...

And now for a praise and prayer request - I, my brothers, and some friends had a wonderful and beautiful hike yesterday up to some lakes called Lakes of the Clouds. From there, we hiked up to Silver peak, and then followed the ridge to another mountain called Mount Marcy. Between the two peaks, there was an absolutely beautiful meadow (rather uncommon on a ridge), and I think God made it just for me.... I could have stayed there until kingdom come... But food called, which you know is a strong call for me... and we started back down. However, last year on  the way down from a mountain (a year ago today, in fact), I somehow hurt my right knee. I haven't really had any problems with it since then, until yesterday. It flared up really bad and my brother Aaron had to help me down the mountain. I couldn't even walk up the stairs to the porch without tears streaming down my face, it hurt so bad. But, I've had a lot of people praying for me and a full recovery, and right now, I can go up and down the stairs without too much pain, and I've got almost all of my flexibility back! My left knee is stiffer than my right one now... which is understandable, since it had to compensate for my right side giving out. The right one hurts the most when I straighten it and put my weight on it, but once I'm standing, it's fine. But praise the Lord for the recovery it's made so far! He's amazing.....

I'd totally do that hike again. It was so beautiful. But without the knee problem....

  • Back!

Hey all! I'm back from the UK, and as soon as I have time to actually sit down and go through the photos and stuff, I'll give you all a meaningful update on the trip. Let me just say it was AWESOME! Scotland is amazing....

Anyways, I'm helping put together a curriculum for a kid's program I'm on staff for and wanted to know if you could help me out! I need games for this year to go in the Get To Know You and Fun Extra Games categories in the curriculum. We're looking for Jungle and resourceful themed games, so if you find any like that, send them my way!

    Thanks!

  • In England

Well, here I am in England! It's been so fun, I've been to Wales, London, Bath, and Stonehenge. Tomorrow we leave for Scotland and we'll be going to a castle there. Then we'll start the hiking!

I loved walking around Bath - so amazing walking around such an old city! And the street musicians in London were amazing. The London nightlife was so different than any I've ever seen. It's when the locals come out: several were doing some awesome rollerblading stunts, and there were street musicians on almost every corner.

    This trip has been amazing!

About Me

  • Hey all! I'm a farm girl who ironically loves to hike far away mountains! I also love to fish on high mountain lakes, look at starry skies, snowy nights, run atop round bales, and have the wind blow through my hair. Other interests are: music, dancing, watching sunsets, taking pictures, photoshop, landscape, playing with my puppies, biology, and speaking Spanish. Right now my Lord & King is leading me to study areas such as digital media, biology, medicine, and managing my photography business.
